Random thoughts on art, technology, stuff, and occasionally Real Estate: How to embed a video in Google Wave.

How to embed a video in Google Wave.

Embedding a video in Google Wave took me a little while to figure out, despite rather clear instructions in the help forum, because evidently at the moment it only works with YouTube videos, (and the first video I was experimenting with was not a YouTube video).  OK.

1.  Choose a video from YouTube, and copy the video's URL (NOT the embed code).

2.  In an open Google Wave, either click the Reply icon, or click on the bottom border or a particular comment in the thread.

A text box opens for your comment....

3.  You can type some text, then click on the Link icon.

4.  Type or paste in the URL of the video (NOT the embed code!)  Click Insert Link.

5.  Wave will display the URL with a little light bulb at the end.  Click the light bulb.  (If your video is NOT a YouTube video, you will not see the light bulb, and Wave will only display the link;  only YouTube videos are embeddable.)

6.  Click the light bulb, then click the words Embed Video

7.  The YouTube video will appear in your Wave Message.  Click Done.

8. YIPEEEE!!

I don't suppose Google's ownership interest in you-tube has anything to do with the ease of inserting the you-tube video.

I too will join the group - just getting a chance to hang out with Missy and Cheryl is worth the price of admission (it is free, isn't it?)

@Ted  >>>Google's ownership interest in you-tube has anything to do with the ease of inserting the you-tube video.    <<<<  Ya think?  :-)

Wave is free, hanging out with me & Missy is priceless.  As they say.

This is a great post and I am going to use this as an entry in the Scavenger Hunt. This is so timely since I am buying a Flip MinoHD this weekend!

Cheryl, thanks for the information!  Videos are great ways to enhance blogs.

Cheryl - I really need to get on this video thing!!! I keep telling myself. With these instructions the embed is easy - it's another story to actually shoot good enough video :) ~Rita

Please don't get me started on the pros and cons of agents using video to promote themselves!

Personally, other than watching my favorite rock bands, I am just not crazy about video.

A written post can be visiually skimmed to determine if it something I want to read more carefully.

But to watch a video, I have to commit to watching it without any way of scanning it first to see if it something that interests me.   And watching the thing start to finish generally requires a much longer attention span than I usually have.

But there are exceptions to every rule, of course.  :-)

This post, however, was about how to insert a video in Google Wave.

Wave is in Pre-Beta testing right now.  The posting interface is quite different from that of a blog.  Much more like a forum.

Wave is kind of a hybrid between email and forums with a dash of blogs tossed in.  I am thinking it is going to be great for interoffice communication.  Or any communication between a group of people working on a particular project:  A purchase transaction file, maybe?

Cheryl - I love the smart features included in Google Wave.  The fact that it knows that it is video and gives you the lightbulb with option such as embedding the video is a nice feature.
