Photoshop Elements: The Text Tool

The Text Tool in Elements is very easy to use, and Elements provides several built-in ready-to-go special effects.

Here is a quick tour of the Text Tool:

Open your image.

Click the Text Tool.  Note the tiny arrow in the lower corner of the tool.  That arrow indicates a "fly-out" sub-menu.  Select horizontal or vertical type.

Choose font style and size

Choose font color

Click to place your cursor anywhere in your image, and simply start typing

To change color or font style after typing your text, simply drag the cursor over the text to select it then make the desired changes.

Experiment with Special Effects.  In the Artwork and Effects palette, click the "T" (for Text).  Drag your cursor over the text in the image to select it, click on an Effect in the palette, click Apply.

Experiment with Layer Styles.  In the Artwork and Effects palette, click the Effects tool, choose Layer Styles from the drop down menu.  Drag your cursor over the text in the image to select it, click on an Effect in the palette, click Apply.

As you experiment, remember that "Undo History" is your friend. <s>.  Click Window, click "Undo History" to open the history tool.

Any time you need to back up, just select an action a few steps up in the history list.  The actions under that item will be "undone".  But can "re-done" just by clicking on them again.

Your text can also be repositioned in the image.  Select the text, click the move tool.  Click on the text and drag it to a new position.

Done:

Janet:  Photoshop Elements 5 is $64.99 on Amazon, but you should also be able to buy it at most office supply stores, or software stores.

Photoshop Elements is a great program and well worth the cost. For most of us, it does all we want and we don't need the much more expensive PhotoShop.

Cheryl, as I've said before, you're a great teacher, and should compile these lessons. I'm waiting for your series of e-books.

Sharon, an e-book is a good idea!  Give me some time to figure out the easiest way to do it.  :-)

Use a typepad or wordpress blog.  You can set it up as an ebook.  Main page as the table of contents.  Create pages for the links to your table of contents.  bada bing! you have an ebook.

Cheryl, you never cease to teach me.  I always have problem with text, because I always make the text box and can never make it fit.  So simple, duh. Just type  Thank you.

Bob:    Great Minds and all that.  I was forever drawing a box first, and trying to insert the text in it, until I read in The Missing Manual that you could just type right on the image without creating a box first.

Yes, I was figuring TypePad.

I'm with Sharon -- you could put out a mean ebook on all of this stuff!  Thanks for the instructions.
