I heard it early this morning on KNX News Radio. If I find a collaborating article on the web, I will post the link.
But AT&T has evidently announced the end of telephone Time Service in California.
If you grew up in the 50s or 60s, you might remember calling "time" (853-1212) to get the accurate time of day.... "At the tone, the Pacific Daylight time will be seven fourteen and twenty seconds. Beep."
Evidently California and Nevada are the only two states in which AT&T still provides this service. And at the end of this year, the service in California will be history.
AT&T says the service will continue in Nevada until the equipment stops working. (What would you call that equipment, I wonder, a "Time Machine"?)

Sad, but true! Here is the article from the LA Times. I saw it this morning and had my moment of nostalgia. No more Wonder Bread, either, at least here in SoCal.
I'm feeling old....
Cheryl,
Your aging yourself with this one. LOL
Good Post
Thanks for sharing, Cheryl. I didn't grow up in the 50s or 60s but I do remember calling the service in the 80s when I was a kid. I'll definitely have to pass this information on to my mom.
I guess since everyone has access to the correct time almost 24/7 there's really no need for the service. We no longer use clocks that loose time but it's still a peace of history.
hhhmmm, I'm surprised that they were still providing that service.

The only thing we enjoyed more as kids besides calling to get the time was calling to ask "Is Your Refrigerator Running??!!" Thanks for the info -- and the childhood memories....
Hey Lisa,
You are so right! I remember doing the same thing. I didn't even know you could still and call for the time. Amazing.
OMG, talk about a flash back! I used to call "Time & Temp" all the time, and yes it was usually out of boredom or to find out if it really was hot enough to fry a egg on the sidewalk...and in western Colorado in the summer time it usually was!
Bob you are a card! Did you really try to bluff your mom in to giving you cookies by calling the police? Thats so great! What a little character!
Oh the memories Cheryl............

This was fun! Thank you everyone for commenting! It is interesting to see how many people do have fond memories of calling "time"!
And thanks Tracy for the link to the article from the LA Times!
