Random thoughts on art, technology, stuff, and occasionally Real Estate: Using Irfanview To Resize Photos In A Batch

Using Irfanview To Resize Photos In A Batch

Sometimes you just simply need to resize a whole bunch of photos.  You don't need or want to edit them individually at this particular point .... you just need to reduce the size as quickly as possible so you can get the photos uploaded for some project or another.

Enter Irfanview.  To me, using Irfanview for just this one task - Batch Resizing - is the easiest and fastest way to go.

You can download Irfanview here

After installing Irfanview, to start a batch resize, click File -> Batch Conversion/Rename

The Batch conversion window will open.  In the "look in" box find the folder containing your images.  You can select multiple images at once by holding down the control key.  When you've selected all the images to resize, click Add.

The list of images will appear in the Input files box.  Now click Advanced.  The "Settings for all images" window will open.  Set the width (I used 640 pixels) or the height.  You don't need to set both, the image will mantain the same ratio.

Do note that you should resize landscape (horizontal) images and portrait (vertical) images separately.  For a portrait (vertical) image, you would set 640 as the height.

After setting the width (or height) click OK.

Specify an Output directory to receive  the resized images.  (Always pay attention to the output location so you can find the images afterwards.)  Click Start Batch.

The process only takes a few moments to run.

Now you can open up the Output directory folder to view the newly resized image.  Or you can open each resized image in Photoshop for further editing, or you can upload the images.

Thanks for the tip.  I've been using Photoshop Elements to resize photos in a batch using the Process Multiple Files feature and it's worked like a charm for me.

I've been using Irfanview for a number of years and it's a great little workhorse program. I also use it to make a slideshow of my listings to burn onto a CD for in the home. Add autorun language to notepad and it will autorun when the CD is inserted.

I have also recommended Irfanview - one of several Eastern-European software products that I think are  excellent in our markets.

Nice to see another CJ tutorial.  I have been guilty of spending a lot of my blogging time in the political groups of AR for the last few months and neglecting the Photoshop Elements and related stuff group.

I use the resizer that came with XP.  Do you think Iranview does a better job as far as quality goes?

Gene - I haven't tried the XP resizer.   That would be an interesting experiment.

CJ:

Thanks for the tip.  I was just looking for a batch resizer and did not know Iranview did this!  Glad I read this.

Cheryl,

Thanks so much for your info on resizing multiple photos.  I use Irfanview but was never sure how to resize multiple and wouuld do it one at a time.

I do have one question for you.  After the batch is completed you will noticed there is a box on each corner on the bottom.  One says "copy to clipboard" and the other says "exit".  Do you only use the "exit in order to get out or do you just close at that time.

Thanks, Cheryl

Cheryl,

I usually just exit.  Copying to the clipboard would give you the option of immediately pasting/copying them into another application, but that doesn't fit my usual workflow.  :-)

I haven't used this program before.  It sounds interesting. I'll download it and give it a try.  Thanks for your information.

It's a great program to convert tga images into jpeg. Tga images are often the result of pc screenshots.

I suggest using the automatic batch feature in photoshop for those looking to do multiple tasks all at one time. Irfanview certainly makes it easy when specifically targeting the task of resizing pictures but photoshop's advanced recording features allow you to also choose your output settings in fine detail and optimize it. It also allows for cross platform recording which is nice if using multiple adobe programs.

I highly suggest downloading irfanview. It's free and can be found on many websites. Try it!

Cheryl, Does this program give the option to delete the larger originals. I need to free space on my  C drive. I spent time resizing with Fotosizer, then I realized the originals stay!

Followup. I downloaded the program & saw that it gives the option to delete or overwirte originals. I tried delelting & saving the new to the same folder. It would not allow that. I tried overwritng, but my origianls are still there & I am not sure where the smaller copies went? I am going to try again making a folder in advance & try the delete again

I don't think I would want to delete the originals, even when you are low on disk space,  you never know when you might need the full size version for something else..
