Random thoughts on art, technology, stuff, and occasionally Real Estate: Really Useful Tool #1

Really Useful Tool #1

I thought it would be cool to occasionally share thoughts on stuff that I've found really useful.  Here's one:

ScanSnapThe Fujitsu ScanSnap.

It's a compact size (so it fits on a cluttered desk without too much hassle), sheet-fed (so you don't have to open and close the lid for each sheet of paper) scanner that simply does one thing really well.  It scans documents and converts them to the digital PDF format (Adobe's Portable Document Format)

Once you've digitized the documents (or PDF'ed 'em as some people like to say) you can attach the PDF file to an email and transmit it wherever it needs to go.

The PDF format is very widely used across various system platforms.  The Acrobat Reader is free  and can be quickly downloaded, although most new computers are shipped with a PDF Reader installed, if I'm not mistaken.

Another advantage of having a digital copy of a document:  If the paper original gets misfiled (Oh, No, That Never Happens), you can always find the PDF file on your computer and print another copy.

And no, I'm not affiliated with Fujitsu in any way, shape or form.  I'm just a regular consumer commenting on a product.

Own it....love it....getting adobe acrobat (NOT ACROBAT READER WHICH IS FREE) is almost worth the price of the scanner. Easy, easy to use.

Great idea for a home office and highly effective with the pdf conversions. It would be a great asset if it were for an individual but for an office it is still to small...I prefer the Konica BizHub.

All the Moos that's fit to printThis is absolutely one of my favorite tools... It's a no brainer. A thank you still to Sharon Simms who (3?) years ago shared this (physically brought one) with us at the CyberProfessionals meeting.

Great job bring this up Cheryl, I can't say enough about this nifty little machine.

I told a colleague about it the other day and he went and got one. Last night I ran into him at a local restaurant and he said that he was ordered by his assistant to pay for my drink because my recommendation had saved her sanity. I'm the first one to admit that I gave Sharon (Simms, my boss) the devil when she showed up with yet another scanner for me to set up and figure out (she loves the gadgets, ya know) but this is the single most labor saving device we have. In fact, our team of 4 each has one one our desk and worth every penny. Cheers to ScanSnap Nation!

Ok, did anyone notice that Sharon did not write that previous comment? I had been logged in as her because I was putting the links on our web site (copying the code to do so) and forgot to log out and back in as me. So for anyone confused, Sharon Simms is indeed her own boss but the person making the comment above regarding saving another assistant's sanity, that was me, Amy, not Sharon. Not that it matters, really, we all love the ScanSnap but it made her appear a little schizophrenic.
