I found this Theodore Roosevelt quote on a flickr friend's profile:
"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."
I liked this thought so much, I'm sharing it here.
Here's another "Depression Era" rhyme. I'd love to say "I learned it from my mom", but the truth is I don't remember where I first heard it:
"Use it up. Wear it out. Make it do or do without."
:-)

Cheryl - that's more appropriate than ever today. We are where we are, and we have what we have - the difference is what we do with it.
Maybe former Defense Dept. Honcho Rummy was using a variation of that when he told reporters you deal with the Army you have not the Army you want.
All kidding aside. it's a great quote and a good state of mind.
Ken: That made me laugh. But, it's true. :-) Things are what they are. It's up to you how you deal with them.
Very nice post and timely post.
Thanks for the encouraging words
Tony
Very appropriate for our current economic situation. But I like your Mother's saying too.
Words to live by! I delayed my grocery shopping this week to see if I could make due with what I had and it was kind of fun. It forced me to defrost some meat in the freezer that eventually would have been tossed. We should all be making the best with what we have...waste not want not!
Ya know, I've read some posters in various forums who often recommend a grocery shopping moratorium just to use up all the stuff in your pantry and freezer.
Just a quick check of my own pantry, there are cans of soup and cans of corn, and cans of beans, and cans of tuna, and various packaged pastas ... and good grief, who knows what's in the freezer ... why not use some of that stuff up before buying more??
On the other hand, if I don't shop regularly, people working in the store may get laid off cause the store can't afford to pay them anymore.
Sigh. :-)
Hi Cheryl, So true, we must utilitize what we have in the situation that we are in!
I'm living those quotes and feel great!!!
Unfortunately those are signature words for today. Maybe it will get people thinking including me, Cheryl in the now instead of what is to be.... Thanks...
But then there is this: Our whole system is built on the concept of people constantly buying things from each other.
If I decide to do without buying meals at a local take-out joint ... and if several other people in the neighborhood decide the same thing ... it won't be long until the people who work there as clerks and servers are laid off, and sooner or later the place will close its doors.
And then the clerks and servers and the business owners will stop spending ~their~ money at the local department or hardware store...
And the downward spiral continues .... :-(
