Random thoughts on art, technology, stuff, and occasionally Real Estate: WordPress Mu Plugin Folder

WordPress Mu Plugin Folder

I've been muddling my way thru learning Mu (Multiple User) WordPress now since December, and until just a few minutes ago, I never noticed that there are TWO plugin folders in Mu.

One named "plugins" which works just like a plugin folder in single user WordPress, and another folder named "mu-plugins".

Plugins placed in the "mu-plugins" folder automatically activate across all individual blogs in the community, without any action from the individual blog owner.  Reference:  http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic.php?id=1997

Plugins placed in the regular "plugin" folder must be activiated by each individual blog owner as that person chooses.

Donncha's domain mapping plugin (a plugin for Mu that allows each individual blog in the community to be mapped to its own domain name) must be placed in the "mu-plugin" folder in order to function.

I learned this because I inadvertently placed it in the regular "plugin" folder, busted everything, and it took me about an hour to figure out what was wrong.  :-)

(WOW! AR has email, now if only they would include free standing blog urls... )

Okay, I'm trying to follow along. So what you are saying is that the big boss owner, however, is the only one who can move these folders around?

IOW, let's just say I had was an individual Mu owner, but not the big boss owner. (and if AR was a believer in link love, I might be able to point you in that direction) As an individual blog owner, I still can't put any folder anywhere?

And since AR doesnt' allow non-members to subscribe to posts... I'll check back at some later date. :-)

But before I go... How much cooler would it be for your clients to actually be able to converse with you here? On a blog? Through comments? Seriously? Just like in real life? ;-P

the graphic sez "tuna". fishy  How very appropriate  ;-)

HI Teri,

If the commenter is AR member, the tiny text is a link to their profile page.  Yesterday it was big blue text at the top of the comment.  Jorgen has been noodling around with this for the last couple days.  I daresay it has not yet arrived at its final version  :-)

To answer the first question, only the Big Boss of a Mu community can upload files or folders, or move things around.  A member of a Mu community does not have FTP access.  (Same as a bloodhoundblog.net blog or a wordpress.com blog).  A serious individual blogger will eventually want more control.

Teri already knows this, but for other readers:  My main purpose in working with Mu is a structure to host all my single property web sites under one roof ... and to host virtual offices for buyers under one roof.   One host/one installation/unlimited separate, individual blogs.

The population of other users in my Mu communities is a bit sparse.  And that's OK with me.

Real clients don't seem to hold conversations on blogs every often.  I suspect because they realize that buying or selling a home involves lots of personal, financial-type conversations, and they prefer to hold those conversations in private.  During a conversation, though, they will often refer to something they read on a blog....

Greg's silent "ninety and nine" ...  Or Ardell's "anonymous many"...

Thanks, Cheryl! That answers a few questions.

>Real clients don't seem to hold conversations on blogs every often.

Very true. I stand corrected.

At the same time, potential clients do, and viral sneezers do. And everyone picks up the mojo of the blog and can clearly see how we treat our guests.

I see your name is in tiny print as well, but your avatar is pimped with AR stuff. It's all so very fascinating.
