NELAart Second Saturday Gallery Night is a free self-guided tour of the galleries, non-profits and artist run project spaces located in Northeast Los Angeles (NELA).

NELA has a tradition in the arts that dates back to the early 1900s.

The tradition continues with new spaces opening regularly. NELA is now one of L.A.'s most exciting destinations to view contemporary art.

OPENING AT AVENUE 50 STUDIO: GANAS 2020, an exhibition of stencil and collage on canvas, and rubyliths by artist Ernesto Yerena. The exhibition is based on a story written by Yerena detailing a fictional revolutionary movement, GANAS, fighting for reform, empowerment and dignity. The opening reception for GANAS 2020 will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 7-10 PM. The exhibit will be on display through September 4, 2011 and is free and open to the public.

Yerena, born in El Centro, California, currently living in Los Angeles, but moving to Arizona fights for justice not only on paper, but in the community. He is the founder and curator of the Alto Arizona Art Campaign and the We Are Human Campaign.

If you ask Jon Washburn he will tell you that he is “not a sales person”, but don’t let this fool you! What began as an innocent lunch back in 2009 resulted in me leaving my successful business behind to join forces with Jon at ActiveRain. The goal was to find a sustainable revenue model for a company that was on the brink of running out of the capital.

ActiveRain was a robust community at the time with a little over 100k members but very little dependable revenue. Jon, in my opinion, had two choices: he could clutter every page of AR with advertising, or we could start charging our new members to take advantage of the reputation (SEO) the community had built. Thus, the Rainmaker concept was born.

A few months later I began noticing that the agents who were upgrading to RainMaker with the hopes of increasing their online presence didn’t have the training required to make that possible. So I turned to my trusted friend Steven Graham, who within two weeks developed SEO strategies for those members of AR who needed it the most, and turned it into a two hour training class for new members. This single class evolved into ActiveRain University, led by Steven, which currently has over 10,000 graduates.

This company was Jon’s vision and legacy. ActiveRain is now at over 200,000 members, and in January alone of this year we signed up just shy of 1,000 new paying RainMakers! We were fortunate enough to be asked to join Jon on his journey to accomplish that vision, and we hope his legacy of ActiveRain-- and now DailyTicket-- will continue to grow and thrive.

Now that Jon’s active role in the network has ended Steven and I have decided to find a new vision. Changing lives, both within the ActiveRain community and at the ActiveRain corporate offices, is the reason we came to ActiveRain and the reason we stayed. Jon gave us the freedom to create a unique culture here that you couldn’t find anywhere else. The community thrived, as did the employees of ActiveRain. Since the changing of hands, we have grown to miss the creativity and challenges that come with building and maintaining this type of culture.

As of today Steven Graham and I will no longer be employed by ActiveRain. The time has come for us to find a new home. We have been invited to help ePropertySites.com develop a social media and SEO blogging platform as their V.P of Sales and SEO Blog Trainer. A $60,000 Eulogy for ActiveRain

Welcome dearly beloved, friends, and family. We are gathered here today to honor the memory of ActiveRain, taken from us before her time.

I haven't known ActiveRain as long as many of you. We were introduced through a mutual friend early in 2008. Full of laughter and grace, I couldn't help but fall in love, and committed myself fully to her free spirit during that perfect Washington summer.

Some are born to do great things. ActiveRain didn't just provide a forum for real estate professionals and consumers; she fostered friendships and forged enduring connections that will last long after we've left this burial plot and her name is little more than a faded memory.

She didn't talk much about the cancer. Jon cared for her tirelessly and believed, even until the bitter end, that he could save her. But ducem mercatum is an insidious disease and knows no cure.

Her grace under pressure should serve as an inspiration to all. After learning that Matt and James, once counted among her dearest friends, had sold her out to ducem mercatum for 30 pieces of silver, she simply smiled. No complaints or bitter recriminations accompanied the news of her now-certain death. When Jon was stripped of his power of attorney (née chairman of the board seat), leaving her adrift and under the care of "new management", she offered no protest. And when death finally arrived, she passed secure in the knowledge that she had made a difference in the world.

A wealth of journals filled with wonderful memories still line her shelves. I know that she would want you to keep your writing alive, and encourage you to collect your belongings before the house is sold or razed.

Why the $60,000 eulogy? That's the blood money her new caretakers offered me to reanimate her lifeless cadaver. I choose instead to remember her as she was on that summer day when we first met, full of life and ready to set the world on fire.

We will always love you, ActiveRain. Rest in peace.

4th Annual Peace in the Northeast March May 14

The 4th Annual Peace in the Northeast March and Resource Fair will be held on Saturday, May 14, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

The kick-off event will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the front of the Glassell Park Senior and Community Center (3750 Verdugo Road). Starting at 11:00 a.m., participants will then march for three miles to Florence Nightingale Middle School (3311 N. Figueroa Street), to join the Community Resource Fair. Bus transportation to and from the event will be available. Buses to join the kick-off event and Peace March will leave promptly at 9:30 a.m. at the corner of Drew/Estara, and at 9:45 a.m. at all other locations that include:

Washington Irving Middle School
Florence Nightingale Middle School
Burbank Middle School
Franklin High School

Buses will depart from the Community Resource Fair at 3:30 p.m.
